The national picture
Trader Joe’s feels ubiquitous in some neighborhoods and entirely absent in others. That intuition is roughly correct. Only about 39.9% of Americans live within 10 miles of a location. Just over half (55%) are within 20 miles. The chain operates in 39 states plus D.C., leaving 12 states with zero stores: ME, MS, AK, AR, HI, ID, MT, ND, SD, VT, WV, WY.

The map
The footprint is heavily coastal. California alone accounts for a third of all locations. Dense Northeast states like New Jersey and Connecticut punch above their size. Interior and Southern states are either lightly served or skipped entirely. Raw store count matters less than population-adjusted access - a state can have stores but still leave most residents far from one.

State rankings
Among states with at least one store, California leads in both raw count and access rate. New Jersey and Nevada also rank high - their compact, metro-concentrated populations cluster near store locations. At the bottom, states with just one or two stores (often in a single metro) leave most of their population far from the nearest location.
